With nearly 200 cathedrals, a church or two in every village and abbeys sprinkled throughout the country, France is a Romanesque and Gothic architect's dream. In few other countries has religion played such an important role. It has been intertwined with French royalty and government since Clovis was baptized and Charlemagne became the holy roman emperor.
The cathedral of Reims was built on the spot where Clovis was baptized and has hosted the crowning of every French king since 1223. With the prompting of Joan of Arc, Charles the VII was crowned here in 1429 with Joan in attendance. Reims is just one example of the way history and religion intertwine to perfection in France.
When you visit the religious monuments of France you can't help but wonder how they were built in a time without power tools or heavy lifting equipment. How did they carve to perfection the stones to fit seamlessly together? How did they lift them into place and what has held them there over all these centuries? Another question you will have is this: Why did the revolutionaries of the late 18th century try so hard to eradicate all traces of the church going so far as to chisel away the faces of saints and royalty?
From simple Romanesque churches with their thick walls, small windows and dark interiors to the grand flamboyant Gothic cathedrals soaring to the heavens with airy arches and stained glass, you will find that no two churches are the same. Even if you aren't religious you will find them interesting and beautiful beyond compare.
We pride ourselves on providing a unique experience for every one of our guests. After all, it is one of the reasons you choose a private guide over a public tour bus. With a private guide you get something unheard of on a public tour...flexibility and our undivided attention. You can consider us your friends who live in France, friends who just so happen to have the time and inclination to show you around this great country.
Every village, town and city in France has at least one church or cathedral. Most are from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries and almost all are Roman Catholic. The way to choose the cathedrals and churches to visit is to tell us what you are interested in wether historical or architectural. There are numerous sites to fit most interests.
Paris is home to many religious sites. Most have been severely damaged during the revolution and by the procession of time, but many have been restored. However, there are quite a few old treasures to be found and even some that aren't on the tourist track.
At A Guide in France we do not use standardized itineraries; therefore, we often dine casually, on-the-fly. If you have any restaurant preferences, please let us know during the itinerary-building process and we will plan accordingly.
Meals: we usually dine separately from our guests but will join you if asked. Either way, we will always assist you with the menus and ordering.
