Languedoc Roussillon is a vast area of land that borders the Mediterranean sea from the Pyrenees mountains adjoining Spain to the Rhone delta in the Camargue area. A region of high mountains (1,500- 3,000m) and fertile plains, it boasts some of the finest and cleanest beaches in France. Languedoc was also the territory of the Cathars and of their citadels – impregnable fortresses, like the one in Carcassonne. At one time a Celtic, Roman, Visigoth and Saracen stronghold, Carcassonne still sports remnants of all its former occupiers.
The Roman bridge and aqueduct “Pont du Gard”, a Unesco World Heritage site, is one of the most famous landmarks of France. Going back in time even further, you will discover that the region is one of the most important in France for standing stones and megalithic burial chambers (5,000-3,000BC).
Languedoc Roussillon is a land where traditions are still vivid: manual salt production in the Camargue; bull breeding and herding for local bullfights; naval jousts of fishermen involved in friendly tournaments… friendly enough.
It offers a wide range of activities, water-based such as sailing, swimming, wind surfing, diving and fishing; land-based like cave exploration, tennis, golf, etc.
The region is also renowned for the diversity of its agricultural produce and its delicious cuisine. Based on olive oil, garlic and basil, this cuisine is typically flavoured with herbs of the Provencal garrigue (scrubland) such as thyme, rosemary and bay leaves. It is not to be missed!
We pride ourselves on providing a unique experience for every one of our guests. After all, it is one of the reasons you choose a private guide over a public tour bus. With a private guide you get something unheard of on a public tour...flexibility and our undivided attention. You can consider us your friends who live in France, friends who just so happen to have the time and inclination to show you around this great country.
The Languedoc Roussillon is quite extensive ranging from the Pyrenees and the Spanish border to the mouth of the Rhone river. The walled city of Carcassone draws many tourists to the region and the Pont du Gard is the second most visited public monument in France after Mont St. Michel in Normandy.
The Languedoc Roussillon region produces over half of all French wine. Wine tasting in France is a refreshing experience with the quality of the wine and beauty of the region speaking more to authenticity than to marketing.
At A Guide in France we do not use standardized itineraries; therefore, we often dine casually, on-the-fly. If you have any restaurant preferences, please let us know during the itinerary-building process and we will plan accordingly.
Meals: we usually dine separately from our guests but will join you if asked. Either way, we will always assist you with the menus and ordering.
