The Dordogne is a region of high hills, steep cliffs, narrow gorges and green plains where majestic rivers flow. Plus, there's a lot to do: Canoeing, kayaking, hiking, golfing, speleology, horse riding, and walking-about are just some of the sporting activities you can indulge in while visiting the Dordogne.
It is the land of the “1001 castles”, ranging from medieval fortresses to the finest examples of Renaissance architecture, and the “bastides” (medieval towns) nestled below the castles. Host to fabulous open air markets selling traditional crafts and local farm produce such as foie gras, walnuts, strawberries (Perigord is the leading producer of both of these fruits in France), chestnuts, “black diamonds” (truffles), Bergerac and Montbazillac wine.
The Dordogne river springs to life high in the Massif Central and cuts its way deep through granite valleys before spilling out into the fertile lowlands and limestone plateaus to the east. The river has created a landscape that will forever linger in your memory and has helped spark the imaginations of people for tens of thousands of years.
Home of the painted caves of Lascaux and Les Eyzies - European capital of prehistory – where men in the Paleolithic period decorated cave walls that were never touched by natural light. In case you don't know already, the Paleolithic period was a bit before our time... say 15,000 years or so.
We pride ourselves on providing a unique experience for every one of our guests. After all, it is one of the reasons you choose a private guide over a public tour bus. With a private guide you get something unheard of on a public tour...flexibility and our undivided attention. You can consider us your friends who live in France, friends who just so happen to have the time and inclination to show you around this great country.
The Dordogne region covers a large portion of France's southwest but we are most interested in the Dordogne valley just to the east of Bergerac. This is an area of immense beauty, medieval quaintness and an intriguing history.
At A Guide in France we do not use standardized itineraries; therefore, we often dine casually, on-the-fly. If you have any restaurant preferences, please let us know during the itinerary-building process and we will plan accordingly.
Meals: we usually dine separately from our guests but will join you if asked. Either way, we will always assist you with the menus and ordering.
