Independent and proud, Brittany has always set itself apart from the rest of France. It wasn't a part of France until Anne of Brittany married into French royalty in the 15th century and even then the region retained its autonomy. Some of the people continue to speak a dialect of Celt called Breton and road signs are often in both French and Breton languages. Before the Celts made the region their own, the Neolithic inhabitants of Brittany (3,000 B.C.) erected monumental stone rows and religious sites that stand to this day. The number of stones and their concentration and size make Stonehenge look like tinker toys.
The mystery of the Carnac stones may have contributed to the tale of Merlin the wizard. His spirit is said to inhabit the scattered woodlands of Brittany. At one time a great forest, thick and enchanted, covered the land. Today it is a fragmented relic of its old self but here and there you can feel the spirit of Merlin touch you.
Because Brittany is surrounded on three sides by the sea, it has a rich seafaring tradition. Jacques Cartier was born here and sailed from the walled city of St. Malo on his way to discover and explore Canada. The city was also home to numerous privateers who raided the ships of French enemies on the high seas. Today the plush estates of the privateers built around St. Malo attest to their success.
Mont Saint Michel is one of France's most visited monuments. It is an impressive rock that stands like a sentinel between the border of Normandy and Brittany on the north shore. The rock grew from an 8th century church into a Benedictine monastery that drew pilgrims from around Europe throughout the middle ages. Today it draws even more people from all over the world. There's only one way to see it and that is to join the crowds.
We pride ourselves on providing a unique experience for every one of our guests. After all, it is one of the reasons you choose a private guide over a public tour bus. With a private guide you get something unheard of on a public tour...flexibility and our undivided attention. You can consider us your friends who live in France, friends who just so happen to have the time and inclination to show you around this great country.
Brittany is far enough from Paris to justify more than one day of touring. This area of rugged natural beauty is extensive and has many wonders to offer.
Mont Saint Michel is a wonderful, long day trip away from Paris.
